Today we’re going to go through some of the most commonly believed myths about shaving and talk through what’s true and what isn’t. Hopefully you’ll walk away not only knowing more about shaving than you did before, but you’ll also feel more comfortable working shaving into your routine.

Myth: Shaving makes your hair grow back thicker and darker
Fact: Throughout puberty, girls hair becomes thicker and darker. Most girls start shaving right before or right after they start puberty, before their hair has fully grown in, so as time goes on their hair becomes thicker and darker, but that’s because of puberty, not shaving.

Myth: Shaving is only about looks
Fact: Shaving is primarily about hygiene. Body hair helps to spread body oder, and can trap dirt and moisture. Shaving armpits helps control body oder, legs helps keep them clean, and keeping your vagina shaved reduces your risk of STI, vaginal yeast infections, and keeps oder down because it prevents the hair from trapping urine, menstrual blood, and vaginal secretions. Shaving also helps to avoid chafing while walking, and can reduce the risk of a condom tearing. Aesthetics is only part of the equation

Myth: Girls only need to shave their legs if they’re wearing shorts or a skirt
Fact: While it’s true that shaving is most important when girls will be wearing an outfit that shows their legs, leg hair is still visible through leggings, and can be seen around the ankles in jeans and slacks. People will notice leg hair even in long pants, and the hair will also cause chafing and is generally less clean than smooth skin.

Myth: Girls don’t need to shave their armpits if they’re wearing long sleeves
Fact: The primary reason girls need to shave their armpits isn’t because people can see the hair, it’s because the hair significantly increases the potency of body oder and the usage of deodorant. It’s just as important for girls to shave their armpits in long-sleeves as it is in a tank-top.

Myth: Shaving causes ingrown hairs
Fact: Shaving with a dull blade or without proper lubrication can cause irritation, but so long as girls use a sharp blade and proper lubrication, shaving actually reduces irritation and ingrown hairs.

Myth: Shaving isn’t required, it’s a personal choice girls make.
Fact: As a girl, shaving is part of maintaining your body, like brushing your teeth or washing your hair. While it’s true that some girls don’t shave, that’s not because it’s optional, they either were never taught to properly care for their bodies, or are chosing not to take care of themselves, and either way, they are viewed negatively as someone who’s unclean, immature, irresponsible, and unreliable.

Myth: Girls don’t need to start shaving until high-school
Fact: Many girls need to start shaving as early as early as third or fourth grade, and nearly all girls need to shave by middle school. Girls can start shaving whenever they start growing any body hair, even the lighter colored, nearly invisible hair; but they need to shave ass soon as their body hair becomes visible, or as soon as they start growing hair on their vagina whichever comes first.

Myth: Girls should only shave in the direction most hair seems to grow to avoid irritation
Fact: Hair actually grows in every direction and it’s important for girls to shave in multiple directions to ensure complete hair removal.

Myth: Girls only need to shave their vagina prior to a sexual encounter
Fact: Girls need to shave their vagina for many reasons, but primarily because hair on the vagina can trap moisture. This isn’t just from sex, but also urine, menstrual blood, vaginal secretions, and sweat. All of these contribute to bad orders, and increase a girls likelihood of UTI and vaginal yeast infections. On top of that vaginal hair often irritates the labia, and contributes to general body oder too.

Myth: Girls should never shave the vagina from bottom to top because it causes irritation
Fact: just like with the rest of the body, irritation is caused by dull blades or inadequate lubrication, it’s important for girls to shave the vagina top-to-bottom, bottom-to-top, outside-to-inside, and inside-to-outside to ensure complete hair removal.

Those are just some of the most common myths about shaving that we’ve seen floating around online, and we wanted to clear them up so girls know the truth about shaving.

Shaving can be one of the most exciting parts of growing up as a girl, but many girls are afraid to get started because of all the myths out there about shaving.
